Graduate Programs

As a comprehensive center of cutting-edge research and teaching, the Department of Biological Sciences is a vital hub of biological inquiry and learning activity. Over 80 graduate students are enrolled in our three uniquely tailored graduate programs.


Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Nationally recognized program: Our program is ranked in the top 10% of programs by research expenditures by the National Science Foundation and in the top quartile in terms of faculty quality and student experience (according to the National Research Council).

Interdisciplinary training: PhD students have the opportunity to work with faculty across the broad spectrum of life science disciplines.

Superior training culture: PhD students work closely with mentors and committee members in a supportive, rigorous research environment.

Full financial support: All PhD students are supported with a combination of renewable teaching and research assistantships and/or fellowships. Support also includes tuition scholarships.

Training beyond the laboratory: The program enables you to gain skills in grant-writing, public speaking, and classroom instruction, ensuring you are well prepared to succeed post degree.

Master of Science (MS)

Hands-on training: Students develop essential laboratory skills by working in research labs with faculty in a variety of life science disciplines.

Course-based training focused on your needs: Flexible degree program allows you to choose courses that provide you with the background knowledge in your area of interest.

Develop ancillary skills: Build other relevant skillsets such as presentation, data preparation, laboratory safety and management, etc., making you a well-rounded, competitive job candidate.

Option to transfer to PhD: For interested, eligible students, work completed for the MS can be directly applied to a PhD degree at UB.

Opportunities for funding: MS candidates are eligible for teaching assistantships that provide a stipend and tuition.

Master of Arts (MA)

Flexible course selection: Courses from across the spectrum of university departments can be applied to your MA degree.

Research projects tailored to your interest: Options to work with faculty across campus provide you with advanced independent research experience in a field of your choice.

Rapid degree completion option: Highly motivated students can earn their MA degree in as little as 12 months.

Flexible scheduling: Special schedules can be arranged on an as-needed basis.

Successful placement record: Since 2008, more than 76% of our pre-health professional-intended MA program graduates have been accepted into health professional training programs such as MD, DVM and DDS.
