Sampurna Chakrabarti, a senior undergraduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences, has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Considered as one of the most prestigious international scholarships in the world, a Gates Scholarship provides full support for a student to pursue any graduate degree offered at University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Gates Scholars are chosen based on intellectual ability and a commitment to improve the lives of others. Ms. Chakrabarti was one of 55 recipients of the scholarship chosen from a pool of >3700 nominees world-wide. Detailed information about the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program can be found here. Ms. Chakrabarti will be graduating in May 2016 with B.S. in Biological Sciences and B.A. in Psychology. Currently performing undergraduate research in neuroscience with Dr. Malcolm Slaughter in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB, the award will allow Ms. Chakrabarti to pursue a PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge with a goal to discover drug targets to decrease arthritic pain.
